The long-term challenges to the public finances mean that, beyond the next parliament, tighter fiscal policy is likely to be required. Our previous work has shown that putting the public finances on a sustainable footing means we are likely to need to run surpluses.43 This puts the onus on parties to locate plans for looser fiscal policy in the next parliament, within a longer-term strategy to put debt on a decisive downward path.
