What ARE You Doing??

The library has now been closed for four weeks.  Many of you are very anxiously awaiting the opening of the new building!  Fairly frequently we hear the question from one person or another, "What are you doing in there?  Why can't you just open?"  It's a fair question and deserves an answer.  The segment below should help to illustrate what we are doing!

We opened Wednesday, Sept. 10th.  The wait is over!

Getting all the books and materials, shelving,
furniture, computers, supplies, and odds and
ends out of the building that had served as the
library for 113 years. Whew!

Moving 38,000 books and other materials
to the new library.  That took a lot of organ-
ization!

Setting up servers, installing the new network,
getting two new major software programs
going (circulation and computer management),
plus virus protection and the sonic wall

Organizing supplies, setting up work areas,
figuring out work flow

Installing a new phone system and
programming phones, setting up fiber,
cable, Internet access

Construction odds and ends to finish up or
tweak (like pulling additional Internet cabling,
speakers for paging system, programming the
lighting, sprinkler system compression
problems)

Setting up computer workstations,
reformatting computers from old
building, installing new software,
printers, wireless access

Setting up the new circulation system, patron
counter, computer management, ordering and
processing new books, donor recognition

Processing new books, getting them in the
new circulation system, placing bookplates
in them

Ordering and setting up...paper
towel dispensers, waste baskets,
file cabinets, coffee and vending
supplies, etc.

Installing and learning about the new
digital sign...fun!

Helping board members with organizing,
publicizing, and setting up the library auction.
(The small card catalog shown brought $540!)

Three furniture deliveries and installations

Damaged chairs, incorrect items being
delivered, aaah...yes, the headaches

And more headaches...bringing in end panels
and tops for the shelves, finding out they are
done incorrectly.  Taking them away.  Three
deliveries, four major issues.  Maybe the third
time isn't the charm...

Still waiting for half of the tops, the ends of
the tops are not finished yet, all the low end
panels done incorrectly, no shelf dividers yet.
The list goes on...

And the other big headache of the process...
modifications in the parking lot need to be
done before opening.

Installation of the stained glass and fused
glass art by Dawn Thompson

Projector and TV installation plus
the audio system in the community
room.

Signage for the recognition
display, naming opportunities,
and the different rooms in the
library.

Children of staff are hanging out in the
library while their parents work to get
everything ready.

Need some more coffee, Laura?  Remember
we need to train the staff on the new
computer programs, phone system, calendars,
procedures, be ready for a record number of
customers, and get that new schedule set.
