How Can I Help the Library Reach Goal?
The Independence Public Library is in the midst of a capital campaign to raise nearly $3 million to build a new library facility. This is a challenging goal! The library is not planning a bond issue, instead the goal is to raise the needed funds through private donations and grants. Fortunately, Gardner Architecture has worked closely with us to design a very functional and efficient library for the Independence area, so there is a solid library building plan. The city has jump started the campaign with its $700,000 gift. We have many talented and motivated volunteers who are bringing campaign giving opportunities to area people and businesses. In addition to this, there are many ways you can financially support the library fundraising capital campaign. Following are some examples…
Campaign
Pledge:
The Capital Campaign to
build a new Independence Public Library is asking contributors to consider a
pledge payable over a three-year period of time, including 2006, 2007, and
2008. A pledge allows you to spread your gift over a longer period of time and
may permit you to give stronger financial support.
Cash Gift:
Gifts made by check or
other payment out of current income are greatly appreciated by the Independence
Library Capital Campaign. Your cash gift can be toward a three-year pledge or a
one-time gift to this campaign.
IRA Gift:
The President and Congress
recently passed the Pension Protection Act of 2006 that contains a provision
permitting taxpayers to make a direct charitable transfer from their
Individual Retirement Account (IRA). The new benefit is the contributor does
not have to report the IRA distribution as taxable income. Although the
contributor will not be able to claim a charitable tax deduction for this type
of gift, eligible IRA owners can use this charitable gift to satisfy their IRA
annual minimum distribution requirement. The contributor must be age 70.5 or
older at the time of the gift distribution.
CD
(Certificate of Deposit) Gift:
Many times in a capital
campaign contributors want to financially support a project but can’t make the
gift size they desire out of income. A charitable gift to the library campaign
from a CD can help meet the needs of the contributor and also the library
building project.
Stock Gift:
Stocks are a smart method
for giving a charitable gift to the library campaign. The contributor avoids
capital gains tax, stocks are easily transferred to the library campaign, and
this method reduces the actual gift cost to the contributor. For example, a
$10,000 gift of stock to the Independence Public Library Capital Campaign with a
cost basis of $2,000 may only be $6,000 in final costs to the contributor due to
tax benefits. Gifts of stocks are a shrewd choice for charitable giving.
Charitable
Lead Trust:
This type of charitable
giving allows the contributor to make a substantial gift and transfer assets to
their beneficiaries while supporting the library campaign.
