Your Library Connection

A Year in Review – August '04 Library Connection

July 1st marked my first anniversary as library director in Independence.  It doesn’t feel like it has been a year - at least not until I think back through the events and highlights of the last 13 months!  It’s been great getting to know people from the community, and I hope that I will continue to meet many more people over the course of the next year.

I thought I would do a top ten list - the programs, events, and changes made at the library that have been fun and exciting for me.  Hopefully you have liked them, too!

10. Magic Show – A professional magician put on a magic show for kids and families.

9.  Home Front Video Night – We showed a video about what it was like in the U.S. during World War II and how people supported the war effort.

8.  Donald Harstad Author Visit – Donald Harstad, writer of 5 police procedurals, spoke at the library and autographed his books.

7.  Bovee and Heil Concert – Classic cowboy songs were sung and played on the guitar, banjo, and fiddle at the senior center.

6.  Pioneer Living Experience – Kids of all ages enjoyed the hands-on, interactive centers demonstrating what life was like during pioneer times.

5.  Computer Classes – Adults have learned the basics of computers, Word, file management, Internet, and e-mail through our on-going classes.

4.  Storytelling Festival – 4 great storytellers performed in the band shell at the River Walk Park.

3.  Get Caught Reading – Adults got “caught” reading, their pictures were in the paper and on our website, and people had to guess who they were from the eyes and forehead showing over a favorite book.

2.  Moving my desk – I moved my desk out to the main library area.  Before this I was not able to meet library users very easily because I couldn’t see who was at the library or what was happening.

1.  Website – I developed a new website for the library.  I love having another method of communication to the public and allowing the capability of online searching of our books and other items.

What did you like the best?  What would you like to see again?  I welcome and appreciate your feedback as we continually try to improve the library and what we are able to offer to the community.  Feel free to let me know what your top 10 (or top 5, or top 2) library events or changes were during the last year.  If you missed any of the events and would like to see what they were about, check out the pictures on the library website www.indylibrary.org  Thanks for your support!
