Exciting Events on the Horizon

As we close the chapter on our 2009 summer reading programs for kids and teens, we look forward to some exciting events and programs coming up on the horizon.  The summer programs were a huge success with a record 460 children and 97 teens participating.  Attendance at summer reading program events totaled over 1000!  I am thrilled with the first year of summer programs in the community’s new library.   Now that things are winding down, we look towards the fall and some exciting programs geared more towards adults!  These include a special screening of Cinerama Adventure, a presentation by the author of This Water Goes North, and a series of book discussions and presentations called Iowa History Alive!

The first of the events will take place the evening of Sat., Sept. 5th with a screening of Cinerama Adventure.   Randy Gitsch, Independence native and son of Ron and Ann Gitsch, is the producer of this feature documentary.   Cinerama Adventure brings to life the amazing history of the three-camera, three-projector cinematic process which thrilled millions in the 1950s and 60s.  This brought the audience into a virtual reality experience that was far ahead of its time.  We are pleased that Randy Gitsch will be here for the screening so that you can meet him, ask questions, and have a chance at a door prize!  See more about Cinerama Adventure at www.cineramaadventure.com.

One week later, on the morning of Sat., Sept. 12th, Dennis Weidemann, author of This Water Goes North, will be here for a presentation and book signing.  Thirty years ago, Dennis and three other Iowa farm boys hatched a plan to paddle 1,400 miles from Minnesota to the Hudson Bay.  This is a true story of adventure, friendship, and living life to its fullest.  Meet Dennis and find out first-hand about his canoeing adventures in September.  You can find out more about the book at this website http://thiswatergoesnorth.com/ or check it out from the library.

Thanks to a grant from The Buchanan County Community Foundation and Humanities Iowa, the library will be doing a series called Iowa History Alive!   A book discussion facilitated by a community volunteer will be followed by a presentation given by an expert on the subject.  Each of the speakers will be from Humanities Iowa and the topics will relate to Iowa history.   Possible topics are the Underground Railroad in Iowa, Grant Wood and Frank Lloyd Wright, Lewis and Clark, and music and its effects on culture in rural Iowa (otherwise known as Juke Boxes, Pool Halls, and Ducktails).   This program is still in the planning stages, so look for more information in the future!

We haven’t forgotten the kids!  Story times will begin Monday, Aug. 31st.  Mondays at 6:30 pm and Wednesdays at 9:30 am are the regular story times held during the school year.  These are geared towards children ages 3-8 years of age (all are welcome) and last approximately 45 minutes.  Story times include reading to the children, often a rhyme or finger play, and a craft activity.

We are excited to begin this new chapter of programming and hope that you will mark your calendar and attend one or more of the programs.  Thanks to volunteers and grants, many of these opportunities are provided at very little cost to the library’s operating fund.   More information will be coming on each of these opportunities in the future, so check out www.indylibrary.org , 334-2470, or visit us at the library in the coming months.
