New Life at the Library!

May - the springtime of life; youth.  It’s been so beautiful the last few days…sun shining, tulips and lilacs blooming, shoots and leaves erupting with life.  Anticipation for the future goes hand in hand with the spring sun drenching everything with its light and comforting warmth!  This is the perfect time for planting seeds and watching our tiny corner of the earth come alive.

Preparing and Planting a New Library
Turning the earth
When we soon break ground for the new Independence Public Library, it will be a sign of a fresh, new era and new life for your community as well as the library.  The freshly turned dirt and the building of a beautiful and functional library facility are witness to many new opportunities for you.  Thanks for your important role in making this happen!  The community’s overwhelming support and generous giving has made the dream a reality.  Everyone is invited to join us on Saturday, May 12th at 805 1st St East at 10 am to take part in the groundbreaking!  Bring a shovel!

Perennial Favorites
Riverside Cinema
A new season of free movies under the stars is starting to flower.  Riverside Cinema’s 2007 line-up promises to be better than ever.  The votes are in from the community and selections fall in the categories of Iowa Connection, Documentary, Animation, Patriotic, Sports, and Western.  Sponsors of the series thus far are Veridian, Wilson Photography, White Funeral Home-Mt. Hope Cemetery, and BankIowa.  Thank you to those organizations for supplying water and sunshine to one of our perennial favorites!

The first movie will be Friday, May 18th, 8:30 pm at the RiverWalk Park Band Pavilion.  It is our Iowa Connection movie, and is sponsored by Veridian Credit Union.  Veridian will be giving  stadium blankets to the first 50 attendees (one per household) at the event that evening.  The second movie will be Keepers of the Frame (I have permission to publish this title, but not the other movie titles), a documentary produced by local native Randy Gitsch.  For more information about Riverside Cinema check out the library’s website at www.indylibrary.org or call 334-2470.

Summer Reading Program
Spring also brings new life as we rush around planning for our summer reading program.  This great program that encourages kids to maintain their reading skills (and have fun doing it) throughout the summer has the theme Get a Clue @ Your Library!  This is a free program for babies to twelve year-olds filled with great programs and reading incentives.  Registration for the program begins June 4th – don’t miss out!   Thank you to the many sponsors providing the essentials for another great year of reading and fun for our area kids!

Landscaping for the Future
Nurturing with Sunshine and Water
In future years we hope we will be able to bloom in new ways!  Let’s add a reading program for teens and one for adults (maybe during the winter), more books, and more computers.  Other brainstorms…additional online tools and databases to help you get quality information from the Internet, online audio books, music available for checkout, book clubs, classes for the small business owner, concerts, and an indoor movie series. These are just a few of the seeds for a more varied and colorful array of library offerings.  Of course, we need some good soil, rain and sunshine to plant these seeds and make them grow.

There will be new things cropping up all summer @ your library, so keep reading the newspaper and checking out the library’s website at www.indylibrary.org.  We would be glad to see or hear from you – the library is at 210 2nd St NE and our phone number is 334-2470.  The roots of a proud past are well in place…let’s work on growing a progressively beautiful future!
