Your Library Connection

Job Search Resources @ Your Library

We have been hearing lots of reports of increased library usage due to the poor economy in the news as of late…CNN, NBC, CBS, New York Times, WHO radio, etc.  If you haven’t heard about it, just Google “library usage” and “economy.”  When I did, I got 105 million hits.  One big reason for our boost in people using the Independence Public Library is because of our new facility.  Another factor that could be making a big impact is the economy.

Many people are going to libraries for reading materials, to use computers, check out movies, find jobs, and network with others.  Those who are looking for jobs have many resources at their disposal.  In general, the Independence Public Library has computers connected to the Internet, area newspapers with classified ads, a web page devoted to links for employment resources, books, and study rooms that allow for a quiet work place.

Specifically, we subscribe to many local and regional newspapers.  The library’s computers are hooked up to fiber, which even makes one of our computer technicians drool over the speed!  So, the library offers a fast Internet connection, providing the latest in job openings, and basic software like Microsoft Office applications, simplifying the development of resumes and cover letters.

The library’s web page is www.indylibrary.org.  Click on Web and Reference Resources at the bottom of the page, then on Employment Resources.  There are many links that will provide information on careers, job openings, tips for cover letters, resumes, and interviews, etc.

And, you guessed it, we also have books that can help.  Just look in our non-fiction shelves in 650.1 and 650.14 to find assistance with cover letters, resumes, and interviews.  Our website listed above also has an online catalog where you can search our materials using any computer connected to the Internet.  Just go to www.indylibrary.org and click on Destiny Web Catalog at the upper right.

Consider using the library for assistance when you are doing a job search, and ask the staff for help if you are having trouble finding what you are looking for.

P.S. – Looking for a job can be stressful!!  You may also want to check out materials about pampering yourself, increasing your energy, and feeling better in the non-fiction area of 613.  We also have information (books and DVDs) about do it yourself projects if you are looking to save some money in that regard.

Library Tidbits:

The library will be offering a Spring Fun Make ‘n’ Take time for kids of all ages.  This will be held in the community room on Sat., April 4th from 10-11:30 am.  Come and make an origami tulip, butterfly, and a spring basket!

National Library Week is April 12th-18th!  The theme this year is Worlds Connect @ Your Library.  We will celebrate with two programs.  The programs are related to genealogy with April 14th being Iowa’s Cultural Kaleidoscope featuring Phil Webber from Central College discussing historical settlement patterns and new immigration trends.  The 16th will be Tony Bengston with Genealogy 101, discussing beginning genealogy tips and resources.

There will be a Friends of the Library Book Sale on April 18th and 19th in the library’s Community Room.  April 18th the sale will be 10 am – 4 pm.  The sale on April 19th will be from 1 pm – 3 pm.

More news will be coming about the library’s budget and actions that will be taken to stay within the confines of next fiscal year’s budget (July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010).  Unfortunately, the budget allocations from our main funding sources (city and county) do not cover the increase in operating costs.
