Vote for your Favorite Riverside Cinema Movie Choices!

Would you like to help the movie committee decide what movies to show in the park this summer?  You can with our online voting or with a paper ballot at the library!  We are seeking your input!

This is the third summer for Riverside Cinema.  Each summer during May through September the Friends of the Library shows movies on a big screen in the park.  Using a  bright DLP projector, a 10’ x 13’ screen, and powerful, quality speakers, volunteers set up the equipment so people can come to the Riverwalk Parks to watch a movie under the stars…free!  The movies are set up at the band pavilion in Riverwalk Parks and refreshments are sold at each event.  The line-up this year will be bigger and better than ever.  We will show six movies, including a documentary called Keepers of the Frame produced by an Independence native, Randy Gitsch, a patriotic movie called Stars and Stripes Forever for the Independence Day Celebration, and four other movies for which you can vote!

Just go to the Independence Library website, www.indylibrary.org, click on vote for Riverside Cinema ’07 Movies under New, and go from there!  Each of the movies has a link so that you can find out more about each title just by clicking on it.  This will help you make your voting decisions.  There will be paper ballots at the library as well, so if you want to vote, but prefer not to use a computer to do it, stop in at the library.  Riverside Cinema ballots will be available at the check out desk.

This year the choices range from sports to Iowa connection to westerns and animation.  We will have a movie line-up filled with variety.  Riverside Cinema movies are great community events.  Socialize with friends and family, and then settle in to watch the movie.  Bring your chair or blanket to sit on!  Mark the dates on your calendar now!  They are Friday, May 18th  (Iowa Connection); Friday, June 8th (Documentary); Friday, June 22nd (Animation); Sunday, July 1 (Patriotic), Friday, August 10th (Sports); and Friday, Sept. 7th (Western).

Make sure you get your input to us online or by paper ballot by April 21st, the end of National Library Week.  The ballots will be tallied and results will be posted on the library website by April 27th.  Remember to join us in the park for several great nights this summer!

Library Tidbits:

April 12th – Linda Reuter and Amy Bucknell, authors of two Iowa Hawkeye books, will present about publishing a book and do a booksigning.  This will be held at the Falcon Civic Center’s large meeting room beginning at 7 pm.

Library Building Update:  The Capital Campaign has met its minimum goal for the new library.  However, we are still seeking donations to meet the stretch goal of $3.1 million.  The intention of the stretch goal is to allow for changes in construction costs as well as to begin a library endowment.  Groundbreaking for the new building should be in May (date not yet set), and completion of the building should be in the summer of 2008.

Hometown Helper:  Hamburger Helper is offering a grant to help towns with community projects.  To add a supportive comment to a library application for new books, go to the website, www.indylibrary.org, and click on Hometown Helper.  Then add your comment of 400 words or less to help boost the chances that we will receive the grant.

National Library Week is April 15th – 21st

Stay posted by reading the paper, stopping in at the library, and visiting the library website often, www.indylibrary.org, for new library services and announcements in the future.
