Use your
Library and Save Your $
If your budget could use a boost here and there, the
library can be a good way to help. We’ve been hearing about problems in the
economy and many of those are touching people in our community. You may have
also caught segments on the news about how important libraries are, and how
usage is up across the country.
Usage is up at the Independence Public Library, too. Huge
increases like a 97% increase in patron visits, a 59% increase in checkouts, a
68% increase in computer usage, and a 128% increase in website hits! We also
gave out 519 new library cards from Sept. 10th until Dec. 1st.
That is a 433% monthly increase! Much of this is credited to the beautiful new
facility, but some could be the result of people needing the library more than
ever.
How can the library help provide things you need without
hurting your budget?
- You can use computers, Internet, and wi-fi access here.
You can even reserve a computer on the library’s website so you know you won’t
have to wait.
- Borrow books and DVDs instead of buying them. If we
don’t have what you are looking for, we will do our best to get it.
- Be entertained…come to programs at the library.
Programs for kids, teens, adults, and families are offered. Unless they are
part of a fundraiser, they are free!
- Acquire new skills…besides entertaining programs, we
also offer programs that are educational and informational. We have books and
DVDs that can help you learn and do new things.
- Download audiobooks to your computer or to an MP3 player
by using the NEIBORS program, found on the library’s website. Or, check out
audiobooks on CD or cassette tape here at the library. These are great for
commuters!
- Hold meetings at the library. The library now has a
meeting room as well as several study rooms. As long as your purpose matches
the library policy, you can reserve a room for your group’s meeting or
gathering.
- Come to the library and sit in the comfortable facility
to read magazines and newspapers. Or, access newspaper and magazine articles
on-line through EBSCOHost, a subscription Internet service with current
periodical articles.
- Use our computers, newspapers, and books to help you get
a new or better job. Find available positions, write your resume, and prepare
for your interview with our resources.
- Take tests for a class…you can take online or paper
tests here at the library in one of our study rooms. If you need a proctor,
we provide that service for free (please call ahead.)
- Use the library as a place to connect with others and
feel a sense of community during times that are tough financially.
The library offers many options that could help ease your
financial burdens. Come check out the possibilities, and tell local decision
makers how important these are, especially in tough economic times!
