Your Library Connection

The Butterfly Has Emerged

It seems that everywhere I look these days there is change in the air and an effort to transform.  I can see four physical transformations at the library alone as of the last week and a half… a newly accessorized teen area, new landscaping, additional concrete to provide a permanent place for a bike rack and bench, and the Lee Mansion’s west wall is getting a facelift.

I went to the Iowa Library Association Conference last week and learned about transforming the library presence… reaching out to those on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, networking, marketing, security, programming, etc.  At home, we are building a deck and our girls are gearing up in an effort to transform into a superhero and a ladybug.

As I see all these positive transformations (though I’m sure glad I get Rachel and Ava back as themselves after trick or treating), it reminds me of an article I wrote just before the grand opening of the library.  It was called, “A Beautiful Butterfly,” and this is a snippet from the article: “’If nothing ever changed, there’d be no butterflies.’  The author is unknown, the meaning profound.  Change is not always positive, but at times it creates a beautiful outcome, like the butterfly.  Our library is a butterfly, a symbol of what can be done when people work together for the common good.  We don’t know yet where and how it will fly, but it promises to be a wonderful flight.”

In the scheme of things, our butterfly is just emerging from the chrysalis and spreading its wings.  Overall, I think it has emerged beautifully.  I’m excited about increases in visits, programming, check outs, and computer usage.  I love to see people bringing in their computers and using the wireless Internet.  It is still awesome to see people relaxing,  enjoying the space, and using the library as a meeting place.  We have offered a variety of programs with good feedback and attendance.  This has all become more attainable with our new library facility.

I have many ideas for continued transformation at the Independence Public Library.  However, it is your library, and I would also love to hear your ideas.   I would like to extend an invitation for your suggestions and comments.  How would you like to see the library transform?  We now have a suggestion box at the circulation desk (check out area), so this is an easy and anonymous way to provide a suggestion.  You are also welcome to e-mail me or stop in to visit at the library.  My e-mail is indylib@indytel.com.

It is my hope that the library will continue to transform to meet the needs of the community as times change.  Even with limitations, most often in the areas of time and money, there is a lot of potential.  My hope is that the library can be a source of ideas, inspiration, connections, comfort, and maybe even a source of positive transformation in your life.
