Library Will Open on Sundays!
The Independence Public Library will be opening on Sundays starting November 2nd. Saturday hours will change to 10 am – 4 pm (current hours are 10 am – 3 pm) and Sunday hours will be 1 pm – 4 pm. The library board has chosen to use a portion of the funds from the sale of the old library (Munson Building) to pay for staffing and overhead costs for the additional hours from November 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009. This one-time funding that is being used provides a way to take a step forward and offer Sunday hours to the community. However, this special funding is a one-time, temporary solution, and will not be available at the end of this fiscal year. If Sunday hours are to continue beyond June 30, 2009, funding will have to come from a regular source, such as the City of Independence or Buchanan County, the public library’s two largest funding sources.
Adding an additional hour on Saturday and Sunday afternoon hours increases the accessibility of the library greatly and allows people to enjoy the benefits of our great new facility seven days a week. Increasing the hours and library services will create a perfect opportunity for many who can’t come to the library during the week. It will be a great benefit for all to have an inviting destination to meet, gather, and learn…one that doesn’t hurt the pocketbook.
The community has blessed the library, giving in so many ways to make the beautiful new facility a reality, and we would like the opposite to also be true…that the library would be a blessing to the community. I’m hopeful that it already has been a blessing, if not through direct library services, through the pride you feel about your community and through the positive attention it has garnered for the Independence area. The additional Sunday hours are one way we hope to provide increased and better service to you. The library board and staff hope that you will take advantage of these added hours and increased access.
Library Tidbits:
The Library’s Grand Opening was a huge success! Over 750 people came to the event and enjoyed the music, speakers, programs, magic, face painting, balloons, cake balls, etc! A great big thank you to so many people who helped to make the day a success!
The library will show a movie matinee and evening showing on Sat., Nov. 1st at 1:30 and 6:30. They will be held in the library’s Community Room and are free to the public.
