Winter seems to be fast approaching!
Colder temperatures bring this to our attention even if we had hoped that
warm weather would linger on. As
the weather changes we think more about school and event cancellations,
postponements, and late starts. Not
to mention what clothing and outerwear are appropriate for a given day.
I find it easier to go to the Internet when I need a quick update on the
weather than to go to radio or TV, because I may have to wait to hear it on
radio or TV and it is always easily accessible on the web.
If you have access to the Internet, I have provided links
to news and weather on one page of the library website. This includes local, regional, and national newspapers, area
TV stations, and weather websites. To
get there, you need to first go to the library homepage www.indylibrary.org.
Next, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Web and Reference
Resources. Then click on
News/Weather Resources. If you
think you will use the news/weather webpage often, you might want to bookmark it
(or save it as a favorite).
Once you get to the page, the news and weather links are
broken down into categories. The
newspaper sites typically publish the front page or headline stories, not always
including entire articles. For news
and weather, the local news stations KCRG, KGAN, and KWWL are all available as
links. These are handy links for
local news and weather. The
remaining category is Weather. Below
I will highlight a few of the special features available related to the weather
sites.
KCRG has an option of signing up for the Personal Pinpoint
Futurecast. This is a free service
that you must sign up to get. It
gives an hour-by-hour forecast for up to four locations of your choice.
They will e-mail you daily with a link to access the personal forecast,
or you can access it via the KCRG website.
Also, if there are any severe weather alerts for your area, they e-mail
you the alert as soon as it is announced.
Intellicast provides a complete 10-day forecast including
highs and lows, chance of rain, sunrise and sunset times.
It’s as easy as clicking on the Intellicast site, putting in the zip
code or city and state at the top after Find a Forecast and clicking on the
arrow (or use enter on your keyboard). Quick
and handy!
The Weather Channel provides a free desktop weather option.
This is a service that will provide a local weather station on your
desktop (you always have the option of closing the window).
It includes the current temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind speed.
Options to access an hour-by-hour forecast and maps showing radar and
other weather information are also available with a click.
Looking for other information on the web besides news and
weather? Go to the library home
page www.indylibrary.org , click on
Web and Reference Resources at the bottom of the page, and look through the list
of other available topics. Genealogy,
health and medical information, employment sites, kids’ resources, basic
reference links and other categories of information are available.
These sites have been examined for accuracy and are reputable sites.
Have fun browsing!
